This isn't a subject to take lightly. Don't rush. Get professional advice. Draw up a plan. Think long-term. If you do it right, what you plant today should be a beautiful and valuable shade and/or ornamental tree even 100-200 years from now. If you have enough space, why not plant a Bur Oak? (Check out the admirable specimen in Big Timber's Lion's Park.)
If your space is limited, consider Japanese Tree Lilac or for a more naturalistic look, 'Autumn Brilliance' Serviceberry. We can't claim the choices in Montana are limitless, but they're vast. With a thoughtful selection process, your tree should bring years of enjoyment.
